Joey Weisenberg has set out to remind people and communities of their own musical potential, and to show that music teaches us not only about sound, but about the very underpinnings of spiritual existence as music “tunes us in” to the broader energies in the world around us. Based on his experience with nigunim (wordless melodies), nusach (prayer chant), klezmer music, and other Jewish musical styles, Joey teaches focused sessions that demonstrate the melodies, rhythms and styles that have made Jewish music exciting and accessible for many generations.
“More than any other art form music has urged a new creative vista for Jewish expression and practice in our era. By fusing theory, pedagogy, and deep knowledge and feel for music, Joey offers a precious map for those of us who believe that a community must be able to translate it in sacred traditions and texts through art to know where it needs to go." – Stephen Hazan Arnoff, Executive Director of the 14th Street Y Founder of LABA: The National Laboratory for New Jewish Culture
Joey Weisenberg is unique as an artist and teacher known for his cultivating the grassroots musical-spiritual creativity of the Jewish people. He is a gifted multi-instrumental musician, singer, composer, and teacher. Joey is most renowned for his composition of new nigunim and Jewish melodies that has led to a worldwide following. He is a devoted student and teacher of ancient and traditional Jewish melodies, bringing them to life through his online master classes in Jewish song and prayer and as leader of Hadar’s Rising Song Institute in New York City.
We are bringing Joey to New Mexico to inspire our diverse communities and engage Jews from all backgrounds with Joey’s unique vision: to educate and train individuals and communities around the world to unlock their musical-spiritual potential and make music a vibrant, joy-filled force in Jewish life. This will be the first time for many Jewish New Mexicans to experience Joey’s stunning creativity, his charismatic presence, his beautiful musicality, and his brilliant teaching.
