Do You Love Jewish Music and Song?
Introducing the Shabbat with Friends Singing Core.
Many of our SWF Gatherings center around of singing of Jewish folk melodies around the Shabbos table. Singing together on Shabbat was cultivated as a form of "Oneg Shabbat"-the effusive joy of the Sabbath day. Through participatory group singing we build community and access authentic Jewish spirituality. Our approach to group singing is influenced by the teachings of Joey Weisenberg and the Rising Song Institute which are reviving participatory singing traditions around the Jewish world. Our goal is to revitalize these singing traditions and create opportunities for Shabbat group singing here in New Mexico. We do so through the talents of our Oneg Shabbos Ensemble and with the future singing vanguard of the Shabbat with Friends Singing Core.
We envision the SWF Singing Core as a group of 6-12 people who will be the match that lights the fire of song at our gatherings. The Singing Core is not a choir, rather it is a group of enthusiastic singers who make it easier for people to familiarize themselves to the Jewish songbook and to loosen the inhibitions that inhibit some people around group singing. The Singing Core members will work with Rabbi Dov and our lead musician, Clara Byom, in building a rich repertoire of Jewish melodies to share at our gatherings. Belonging to the Singing Core is the best way to become conversant with the treasury of Jewish folk music such as Nigunim, Zemirot, Shirim, and Tefilot. We also will learn songs from Sephardic, Mizrahi, and Ashkenazic communities. If you love to sing and to bring joy to people, the Singing Core is for you.
To learn more about the Singing Core, contact Rabbi Dov by email at dov@shabbatwithfriends.org or call 505 582-9577. Check the Calendar/Signup page for Singing Core Song Sessions. The first meeting of the group will be on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at 7:30pm at the Rabbi's home. Sign up HERE.
