About the event

Sabbath table singing is first attested to Jews of North Eastern France in the 12th century. It is likely that this unique form of participatory singing that takes place around a sacred Sabbath meal is much older.  The Jewish tradition of singing around the table is one of the ways Jews honored the Sabbath to make it a temporal island of joy, rest, and comradery. Participatory table singing on the Sabbath is a "sibling" to the beloved Passover Seder participatory singing that is a distinctive feature of the  Festival of Liberation.

In the spirit of this beloved tradition, local artists Jordan Wax, Judah Horowitz, and the Convener of SWF, Rabbi Dov Gartenberg invite you join us in participatory singing of Shabbat and Passover melodies as we enjoy a Shabbat potluck dinner on Friday, April 12th in Santa Fe.  Enjoy a truly authentic, joyful, connecting, and transcendent Shabbat at the home of our hosts, Betty Evans and Mike Makoid.

Like all Shabbat with Friends (SWF) gatherings, this is free and open to the community. It is a kid-friendly gathering, intergenerational, and friendly to folks of all backgrounds.

Please pre-register for this gathering prior to Shabbat.  When you register, you can elect to make a donation to the nonprofit, Shabbat with Friends NM, which organizes Shabbat gatherings like this one all around New Mexico.

Once you register, you will be sent a link to the potluck signup and the address of the Evans/Makoid residence.

For questions about this Shabbat gathering, please write to Rabbi Dov at dov @ shabbatwithfriends.org or call 505 582-9577.

We wish you a Shabbat of blessing and rest,

Rabbi Dov Gartenberg, Convener, SWFNM
