Musical Shabbat Gatherings
Our signature offering is the Musical Shabbat Gathering, hosted by volunteer households in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. These free, welcoming events feature a festive Shabbat meal and spirited communal singing led by our musical ensemble, Oneg Shabbos (Hebrew: “Sabbath joy”).
The Musical Shabbat Gathering is the signature program of Shabbat with Friends NM (SWF).
This gathering builds on the ancient Jewish tradition of singing around the Sabbath table, enhanced by live music from our Oneg Shabbos Ensemble. Oneg Shabbos—Hebrew for “Sabbath joy”—captures the spirit we aim to cultivate through feasting, singing, and forming new friendships.
Our musicians and volunteer singers make it easy and joyful for everyone to sing along and learn melodies from across the Jewish world. We share nigunim (wordless melodies), psalms from Hebrew Scripture, medieval Shabbat table songs, Israeli folk songs, and classic summer camp melodies sung in the round. Some melodies are familiar; others are newly composed and full of fresh energy. Each song is chosen to uplift the heart and soul. When we sing together, we create deep and meaningful connections—living up to our name, Shabbat with Friends.
In 2026, SWF will offer 10 Musical Shabbat Gatherings, with monthly events alternating between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. These gatherings are free, open to the community, and child friendly. Each gathering includes a potluck Shabbat meal organized by Shabbat with Friends followed by community singing with live music accompaniment. Pre-registration is required.
