About Musical Shabbat Gatherings
Shabbat with Friends’ Musical Shabbat Gatherings are our most popular program. These events, whether on Friday evening or Saturday afternoon, weave together a festive Shabbat meal with a moving participatory group-singing experience.
Sabbath table singing goes back centuries and was always a Capela following the rabbinic prohibition of playing musical instruments on the Sabbath after the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE. In an era where live music has returned to the synagogue, SWF has pioneered enhancing Sabbath table singing with accompanying music by our Oneg Shabbos Ensemble (“Sabbath Joy Ensemble). The musicians’ artistry makes it easy for everyone to join in, whether you are an experienced singer or discovering this music for the first time. Together we share the Jewish love of sacred song—joyful, connecting, and deeply engaging. Among the songs we sing are:
-
Nigunim – Hasidic wordless melodies
-
Zemirot – centuries old classic Shabbat table hymns
-
Shirim – short scriptural or liturgical melodies
-
Shirei Am – folk songs from Israel and Jewish communities worldwide
Another hallmark of Musical Shabbat Gatherings is the hospitality of our hosts, who open their homes in the spirit of the ancient Jewish tradition that traces back to Abraham and Sarah. Depending on the host’s preference, gatherings range from 10 to 50 guests. While some hosts provide the meal, most often we organize a delicious vegetarian/pescatarian Shabbat potluck with abundant choices.
Musical Shabbat Gatherings are always free for guests, child‑friendly, and open to the community. Pre‑registration is required to receive event details, including the host’s address. We also welcome donations to Shabbat with Friends to make it possible to bring outstanding musicianship to these unique home events.
